KI 3071 Setting up Dell computers with the UiB configuration

(updated )
How to install the UiB setup on Dell Machines using the ZeroTouch method.
ZeroTouch is used to automatically install Windows 11 with the UiB setup on your computer.

You can also follow this guide to reinstall a computer (which you should do every time a computer gets a new owner, as long as its not specifically set up for multiple users).

Please note: if the computer was collected from the IT-department, then its already installed. In this case you only need to log in to the computer with your UiB account while its connected to wired UiB internet. (Only the first sign in to the computer needs to be with wired internet.) If you have any problems signing in, please contact the IT-department.
You need
  • To be in a UiB building and have access to wired internet
  • A charger for the computer
Procedure
1. Confirm that the computer is ready for ZeroTouch
You need to have confirmation from the IT department that the computer is ready for ZeroTouch in our system — otherwise it won’t work.

If you haven’t received confirmation:
  1. Go to help.uib.no and log in to the self-service portal.
  2. Click on Get Help to create a ticket.
  3. On category, select IT.
  4. In the ticket, state that you want your computer prepared for ZeroTouch so you can start the process yourself.
  5. Include the Service Tag, Asset Tag, and Passthrough MAC of the computer (found on a white label under/on the computer).
Once you’ve received confirmation that it’s ready, proceed to the next step.
2. Start the ZeroTouch installation
  1. Connect the charger and the network cable to the computer.
  2. Open the BIOS menu on your computer.
To open BIOS, press F12 repeatedly immediately after pressing the power button. Press at least once per second.
Keep doing this until a menu like this appears.
The start screen of the newer Dell BIOS
If instead you see a menu with blue text at the top and a black background, it means the computer has an older BIOS version. That’s completely fine — you can use the arrow keys to navigate and Enter to select.

If you end up at the Windows login screen or anything else, you need to shut the computer down completely and try again.
  3. In the BIOS menu, go to the sidebar on the left and click on the ONBOARD NIC (IPV4) option.
(If this option does not show up, ensure that the network cable is connected correctly and is working)
The sidebar of dell bios showing ONBOARD NIC (IPV4) as the correct choice to click
  4. Once you’ve done this, ZeroTouch will start automatically. After a minute or two, the screen should look like this:
    A screenshot of ZeroTouch working
The installation will take about 2-3 hours to finish.

If you run into any problems: contact IT BRITA at 555 84 700, or update us on the ticket you created.
3. After the installation
Important: Only log in yourself if you will be the one using the computer. If you're setting it up for someone else, let that person log in themselves.
  1. Keep the computer plugged in with charger and wired internet, and log in to the computer.
  2. When you have logged in to the computer, click the search bar on the taskbar and search for "Check for updates" and click the top result:
Search result for "Check for updates"
  3. On the window that opens up, click the button Check for updates.
  4. Then click the search bar on the taskbar again, and search for "Dell Command Update" and click the top result:
Search result for "Dell Command Update"
  5. On the window that opens up, click CHECK, and wait until it fetches available updates, and then click INSTALL.
  6. After some time, the computer will ask for a restart in order to finish the updates. After you have restarted the computer, the computer should be UiB configured and ready for use.
