KI 2891 How to merge PDF files or spilt a PDF file

(updated )
When uploading files, it can often be useful to merge multiple PDF files. And sometimes you have a large PDF file but want to extract a page or two. You can do this with the program PDFsam.
The PDFsam program is free (the basic-version) . You can install it from Software Center. See KI 2089 How to install software from Software Center for more information.
How to merge documents to one PDF file:
  1. If you do not already have the files in PDF format, you must first save them in PDF format (Save As…).
  2. Open the PDFsam program
  3. Select the Merge function either in the menu on the left or in the button panel on the Home page:
Skjermbilde fra PDFsam med Slå sammen-knappene markert.

  4. Select which files to merge and in what order, by dragging and dropping them to the file list at the top of the window or by clicking Add and selecting files.
  5. You can change settings, including to insert blank pages, add footers, etc., but this will normally not be necessary.
  6. Select where the merged file should be saved and with what name
  7. If desired, choose to compress the finished file under Advanced settings.
  8. Finally, click Run to merge the files into one.

How to split one PDF file into more:
There are several ways to split. For example, you can
  • split by bookmarks in the PDF document
  • split by size so that the parts are the same size
  • split by page number
  • extract one or some pages from a larger document.
Splitting by page number is shown in detail below. The procedure is roughly similar for the other functions, so you should be able to use them once you have seen the explanation below.
  1. Open the PDFsam program
  2. Select the Split function either in the menu on the left or in the button panel on the Home page:

  3. Select which file to split by dragging and dropping it to the field at the top of the window or by clicking Select PDF and selecting file.
  4. Select how the file is to be split. Here we have chosen to split by pages 2, 4 and 7 (the document will then be split into four), but you can also split by each page or with a freely selected number of pages in each part.
  5. Select where the split files should be saved
  6. Choose to compress the finished files under Advanced settings if desired.
  7. Select which text to use in the file name of the split files. (A number indicating the order will be appended first in each file name, and the name of the original document at the end.)
  8. Finally, click Run to complete the split.
